Large urban temperature-controlled fleets have a demanding refrigeration profile: repeated stops, frequent door openings, changing traffic conditions and trucks that may spend their working day moving through densely populated delivery areas.
The Thermo King V-800 Series is designed for this larger truck segment. Unlike a self-powered refrigeration unit with its own refrigeration engine, its road compressor is driven by the truck engine. It provides high-capacity, direct-drive transport refrigeration for fresh and frozen cargo in trucks up to 24 feet.
The series uses a two-piece split architecture consisting of a condenser and ES800 evaporator, together with a swash-plate road compressor and in-cab controller. Four configurations—V-800 10, V-800 20, V-800 MAX 10 and V-800 MAX 20—allow fleets to select between standard and MAX refrigeration performance and between road-only operation and a configuration incorporating electric standby.
For a fleet buyer, however, choosing between those configurations should carefully review their application use case before selecting the right model. Thermo King Eastern Canada can help evaluate cargo temperature, truck body and insulation, route profile, expected door openings, electrical-standby requirements and seasonal operating conditions before the refrigeration package is specified.
Key Benefits
- Vehicle-powered architecture: The road compressor is powered by the truck engine, eliminating a separate refrigeration engine from the V-800 architecture.
- Fresh and frozen application choices: The series includes configurations intended for fresh, frozen and deep-frozen applications. The correct model depends on the required operating temperature and application.
- V-800 MAX for lower-temperature requirements: Published OEM capacities show the MAX configuration retaining rated capacity at -20°F (-29°C), whereas Thermo King states that non-MAX R-134A units are not permitted to operate below 25°F because of system protection.
- Electric standby available: The 20 configurations add electric standby to the road compressor system, creating an option for fleets that need refrigeration while suitable electrical power is available and the truck engine does not need to provide compressor drive.
- 1,600 CFM evaporator airflow: Thermo King’s current North American specification lists ES800 evaporator airflow at 1,600 CFM.
- Urban-operation positioning: Thermo King specifically identifies the V-800 for large urban transport and lists low noise among its product characteristics.
Thermo King V-800 Series
The Thermo King V-800 Series is a two-piece, split refrigeration system designed for fresh, frozen and deep-frozen applications on medium- to large-sized trucks.
The V-800 Series uses a swash-plate road compressor and is available with a range of drive-kit options to support vehicle integration. For fleet operators, the main configuration decisions are the required cargo temperature, whether electric standby is needed, and whether the standard V-800 or higher-capacity V-800 MAX is the better fit for the application.
Key features
- Vehicle-powered refrigeration for medium- to large-sized trucks
- Swash-plate road compressor with multiple drive-kit options
- Fresh, frozen and deep-frozen application capability, depending on configuration
- Model 20 configurations equipped with electric standby
- Low-noise operation
- Direct Smart Reefer in-cab controller
- Split-system design with separate condenser and evaporator
V-800 Series range
- V-800 10 — road compressor only
- V-800 20 — road compressor plus electric standby
- V-800 MAX 10 — road compressor only
- V-800 MAX 20 — road compressor plus electric standby
The standard V-800 should be considered primarily for fresh and certain frozen applications, while the V-800 MAX is the configuration to consider where higher cooling capacity or lower cargo temperatures are required.
